Herb Hammerstaedt joined Nevada Legal Services in March, 1997, and works as a Paralegal in the Carson City office. In 1996, after 23 years of service in the Air Force, Herb received a Bachelor of Science in Paralegal Studies from National College. During his 13 years of service with NLS, Herb has handled cases dealing with TANF, Medicaid, workers compensation, unemployment, private landlord/tenant, subsidized housing, debt collection and social security (Social Security Disability, Supplemental Security Income & Medicare). In addition to his years of experience representing clients in administrative hearings, Herb has also been involved in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program since 2003. In 2006, Herb was asked by the IRS to be a trainer for the VITA program in Northern Nevada to train new volunteers. He has also conducted numerous outreaches in northern rural Nevada under the Low Income Tax Clinic grant. In that capacity, Herb has explained the rights and obligations of taxpayers to persons who English is a Second Language. (ESL program). Herb has been a member of the National Organization of Social Security Claimant’s Representatives (NOSSCR) since 1999. He is also a proud lifetime member of The Retired Enlisted Association.
